Executive Resume Writing Services: Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing an executive resume writer is an important decision. You are trusting someone to understand a career that may have taken decades to build and then determine how to communicate that experience with clarity, credibility, and impact.
Career Steering is a boutique, founder-led executive resume writing and career branding firm with more than 20 years of experience working with senior executives, C-suite leaders, emerging executives, and board candidates.
Below are answers to some of the questions prospective clients ask most often about our executive resume writing services, pricing, process, timelines, revisions, LinkedIn optimization, and what to expect when working with us.
Do I need an introductory consultation before purchasing a service?
No.
While we are happy to speak with prospective clients when our consultation calendar permits, an introductory consultation is not required to get started.
If you are ready to move forward, you may select the executive career branding package that best fits your needs and reserve your place on our project schedule.
Once your engagement begins, we will have several opportunities to connect throughout the process, beginning with the in-depth strategy and information-gathering that guides your executive positioning.
Will I work directly with Rosa?
Yes.
Career Steering is intentionally a boutique, founder-led executive resume writing firm. Rosa Elizabeth Vargas personally leads the strategy, executive positioning, and core writing of your resume and primary career marketing materials.
Other members of our team may assist with proofreading, research, design, administrative support, or other elements of the engagement, but your executive branding strategy and core writing are personally led by Rosa.
What happens after I purchase a package?
Once you enroll, you will receive instructions for beginning our intake and discovery process.
We gather information about your career history, accomplishments, leadership scope, business impact, goals, challenges, and target direction. Depending on the engagement, this may include questionnaires, existing career materials, job targets, supporting documentation, and strategy conversations.
This front-end work is important. We are not simply rewriting the resume you already have. We are determining how your career should be positioned for where you want to go next.
From there, your engagement moves through strategy, writing, development, review, and refinement.
How long does executive resume writing take?
Our typical turnaround is approximately 3–4 weeks, depending on current capacity and the scope and complexity of your engagement.
Your timeline begins once we have received the information needed to move your project into production.
If you are working toward a specific deadline, please contact us before purchasing so we can determine whether your timeline can be accommodated.
Why does the process take 3–4 weeks?
Executive resume writing is not simply an editing exercise.
Before and during the writing process, we spend considerable time understanding your career trajectory, leadership scope, accomplishments, business impact, target direction, competitive positioning, and differentiators.
We also operate within a structured client cycle. At any given time, some clients are being onboarded and moving through strategy, others are in active writing and development, and others are reviewing drafts and working through revisions.
This allows us to give each engagement the attention it deserves rather than operate as a high-volume resume production service.
The goal is not simply to produce a resume quickly. It is to develop strategically positioned executive career materials that accurately represent the level at which you are prepared to compete.
How much do executive resume writing services cost?
Executive resume writing fees vary considerably based on the experience of the writer, the level of strategy involved, and the scope of the services provided.
Career Steering is a premium executive resume writing and career branding firm. Our executive packages begin in the $2,000+ range, with more comprehensive engagements available for executives who need additional career branding and positioning materials.
Depending on the package selected, services may extend beyond the executive resume to include LinkedIn optimization, executive biographies, networking materials, cover letters, recruiter or private equity outreach, and other executive branding assets.
We encourage prospective clients to compare not only price, but who will actually perform the work, the writer’s experience and credentials, the level of strategic involvement, and what is included in the engagement.
What if I already have a resume?
That’s perfectly fine. Most of our clients do.
Your existing resume provides useful background, but we are not limited by its current content or structure. We may substantially reposition, reorganize, condense, expand, or rewrite the material based on your goals.
Often, the most important work is not improving the wording of an existing resume. It is determining what the resume should emphasize—and what it does not need to say.
An executive resume should showcase your qualifications, differentiation, and evidence of impact while giving the reader compelling reasons to want to learn more.
Do you work with C-suite and senior executives?
Yes.
Career Steering specializes in executive career branding for C-suite executives, Presidents, General Managers, Senior Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, and other established and emerging executive leaders.
We also work with executives pursuing corporate board, advisory, and governance opportunities.
What industries do you specialize in?
At the executive level, our specialty is not one particular industry. Our specialty is executive positioning.
Rosa Elizabeth Vargas is a Master Certified Resume Writer and holds multiple leading professional resume and career credentials, along with numerous awards and recognitions for executive resume writing and career marketing.
After more than 20 years, we have worked across virtually every major industry and an extensive range of executive functions, business models, and leadership situations.
Our job is not to know your profession better than you do.
Our job is to know what questions to ask, identify what matters, uncover the business value behind your experience, understand where you are going, and translate all of that into compelling executive positioning.
You bring the expertise in what you do. We bring the expertise in positioning it.
Do you need to have written for my exact job title before?
No.
At the executive level, exact job-title matching is rarely the best measure of an executive resume writer’s ability.
Leadership titles and organizational structures vary enormously from company to company. What matters is understanding your scope, business impact, leadership contribution, target direction, and the level at which you need to be positioned.
After more than two decades of executive resume writing, we know how to uncover that story and translate it for the market.
Can you help if I am changing industries or functions?
Yes.
Strategic repositioning is one of the areas where experienced executive resume writing can be particularly valuable.
We identify the leadership capabilities, business outcomes, transferable strengths, and differentiators that support your next move while reducing unnecessary emphasis on experience that may position you too narrowly.
A significant career pivot may require additional retargeting strategy or materials, which we can discuss based on your goals.
Will you tailor my resume to a specific job posting?
Our methodology is based on executive branding and strategic positioning—not fitting clients to individual job descriptions.
We calibrate the writing to your career target, not to individual positions.
If you are job searching within your established leadership lane, alignment with appropriate opportunities should occur naturally. Your resume should already communicate the leadership capabilities, business impact, expertise, and value relevant to the types of positions you are pursuing.
We do not believe an executive should have to reinvent their professional identity for every job posting.
If you are pursuing a substantially different function, industry, or leadership direction, additional retargeting may be appropriate.
Will my executive resume be ATS compatible?
Yes.
Our executive resumes are developed with both human readers and modern applicant tracking systems in mind.
Depending on your package, you will receive formats appropriate for online applications as well as polished presentation and networking use.
Keywords and search optimization matter, but they are only part of an effective executive resume. The document still needs to communicate leadership, credibility, differentiation, and business impact to the person ultimately making the decision.
How many revisions are included?
Your engagement includes three rounds of revisions.
After more than 20 years in business, we have found that three rounds are sufficient for the overwhelming majority of engagements, particularly because we invest so heavily in strategy and information gathering on the front end.
The first draft you receive is not intended to be a rough starting point. Considerable strategic work has already taken place before that document reaches you.
The revision process allows us to refine an already strategically developed document based on your feedback.
Do you write board resumes and executive biographies?
Yes.
Career Steering offers specialized board resumes, executive biographies, and supporting leadership branding materials for executives pursuing corporate board, advisory, governance, and other high-level opportunities.
Board positioning differs from traditional job-search positioning. These materials focus more heavily on governance value, enterprise expertise, strategic perspective, leadership contributions, and the experience you bring to a boardroom.
Can you help with LinkedIn?
Yes.
LinkedIn profile writing, executive branding, and search optimization are included in select Career Steering packages.
Your LinkedIn profile should complement your resume without simply duplicating it. It gives us another platform for communicating your leadership story, strengthening your executive brand, improving discoverability, and adding context that may not belong on the resume itself.
Do you use AI to write my resume?
Your executive strategy, positioning, and core resume writing are personally developed and directed by Rosa Elizabeth Vargas.
Technology may support research, organization, quality control, and aspects of our workflow, but it does not replace the strategic judgment, executive branding expertise, and professional writing behind your final materials.
What is your success rate?
Our success rate is high, but we do not publish an artificial placement percentage or guarantee employment outcomes.
There are too many factors in an executive job search that no resume writer can control, including the market, networking activity, compensation expectations, geography, interview performance, timing, and the hiring organization’s decisions.
A better measure of our track record is the business itself.
Career Steering has operated for more than 20 years, and the majority of our clients come through word of mouth, referrals, repeat engagements, and professionals who have seen our work. We do very little traditional marketing outside of the reputation our work has built.
Executives return as their careers evolve. They refer colleagues, members of their leadership teams, friends, and family. That continued trust has sustained our boutique practice for more than two decades.
Can you guarantee interviews or a job?
No reputable executive resume writer or career strategist can guarantee interviews, offers, compensation, or employment.
What we can do is develop highly strategic executive career marketing materials designed to communicate your value clearly, credibly, and competitively.
The resume is one part of an executive search. Networking, targeting, visibility, recruiter relationships, interviewing, market conditions, and your overall search strategy also matter.
Can you review my resume before I decide whether to hire you?
We do not typically provide complimentary resume evaluations or detailed strategic recommendations before an engagement.
A meaningful executive resume assessment requires context. We need to understand where you are going, the level at which you intend to compete, and what the document needs to accomplish before determining whether the current strategy is right.
If you would like professional advice before committing to a complete engagement, you may inquire about our current consultation availability.
What if another resume service, recruiter, AI tool, or resume scanner recommends changes?
We welcome thoughtful feedback, but we do not automatically revise professionally developed executive materials based on automated resume scores, AI-generated critiques, generic resume rules, or recommendations from third parties who were not involved in developing your positioning strategy.
Every recommendation needs context.
If a recruiter or hiring executive provides specific feedback related to an actual opportunity, we are happy to consider it within the scope and timeframe of your engagement.
Do you work with executive recruiters?
Our materials are developed to help executives communicate effectively with recruiters, executive search firms, hiring executives, boards, investors, and professional networks.
Certain services and packages may also include targeted distribution to curated executive recruiter or private equity/venture capital contacts.
Distribution expands visibility. It cannot guarantee recruiter responses, interviews, or opportunities.
What if I don’t complete my project or stop responding?
We understand that executives have demanding schedules and circumstances change. However, client projects cannot remain open indefinitely.
Clients are responsible for participating in the process and responding within the timeframes outlined in our service terms. Projects that remain inactive beyond the permitted period may be closed and the engagement forfeited.
If significant time has passed and you wish to return, please contact us. When possible, we may offer a reactivation option based on current services, pricing, capacity, and availability. Reactivation is not guaranteed.
Can I receive a refund if I change my mind?
Because our professional services involve reserved capacity, strategy, preparation, research, and intellectual work, purchases are governed by the cancellation and refund provisions outlined in our Terms of Service.
We encourage you to review our service terms before enrolling.
How do I know which executive resume package is right for me?
Consider both your immediate goal and how extensive your career positioning needs are.
Some executives need a strategically written executive resume, LinkedIn profile, and core job-search materials. Others need a more comprehensive executive brand that may include biographies, networking materials, leadership positioning assets, recruiter outreach, board materials, or other career marketing tools.
Each package page explains what is included.
If you still have questions, please contact us or schedule an introductory consultation when appointments are available.
How do I get started?
If you’re ready to work with Career Steering, select the executive resume writing or career branding package that best aligns with your needs and complete your enrollment.
You do not need to wait for an introductory consultation to reserve your place on our project schedule.
Once your engagement is confirmed, we’ll provide everything you need to begin the intake and strategy process.
Career Steering intentionally limits the number of executive engagements we accept at one time so that each project receives the strategy, writing, and personal attention that have defined our work for more than 20 years.
