Social networking sites have dramatically changed the job search ‘game.’ LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and Online Career Sites can help you– from the comfort of your home–discover new opportunities and tap into the hidden job market.
Why? Because networking, whether it is performed offline or online, is still the most effective way to find a job. However, building a brand, connecting with professionals in your field, and maintaining those relationships is not as easy as just setting up an account (don’t we wish!?). Job Seeker, Are You Crazy? American Idol Encourages It!
I have said it many times before and I will say it, here, again…you have to be willing to stand apart from the job search mob by daring to break the norm and differentiate yourself. Try the new, the fresh—take a chance. Will someone think a resume without an Objective is just crazy? Maybe. Will your friends advise you against a personal branding statement on your resume because that is just not done? Perhaps. If you call a company and ask if they are willing to review your resume will they think you are just insane for soliciting them? They might. But these tactics work! Call them crazy if you’d like but ‘crazy’ worked her for Paul McDonald of American Idol. And a little job search ‘craziness’ will work for you too.

Valentine’s Day: Employer, Be Mine.
On Valentine’s Day we share many heartfelt expressions with our loved ones. We tell them how wonderful they are; how much we appreciate them, that they make our lives better, that we can’t live without them and so forth. And that is wonderful! But, today it is an even more special Valentine’s Day because I would like you to perform an exercise to help you sprinkle some Valentine’s Day ‘love’ on your job search campaign.

Print out your resume and walk away from the computer (after reading the next steps, of course). Find a comfortable, feel-great area in your home. Grab a pen (yes you can live without your computer for a few minutes) and revisit each one of your employments beginning with the oldest. Read more
